During COP 28 in Dubai, the French multinational energy corporation, TotalEnergies, inked a collaboration deal with the Angolan national oil company (NOC), Sonangol, to address and mitigate methane emissions in Angola’s oil and gas sector.
This partnership grants Sonangol access to TotalEnergies’ Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology, a miniature dual sensor designed for detecting methane and carbon dioxide emissions. Developed in collaboration with the Centre national de la recherche scientifique and the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, AUSEA is a lightweight, drone-mounted technology capable of reaching challenging emission points.
The utilization of AUSEA will provide Sonangol with precise measurements of methane and carbon dioxide emissions across various industrial facilities, covering both onshore and offshore oil and gas operations.
TotalEnergies has also entered into agreements with Petrobras, the Brazilian NOC, and the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic to deploy this cutting-edge technology.
TotalEnergies’ Chairman and CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, emphasized, “For the oil and gas industry, cutting methane emissions from operations is a priority as technologies are available… by making our AUSEA technology available to our partners, TotalEnergies is taking a concrete step to encourage the whole industry, including NOCs, to aim for zero methane emissions.”
